The Wither Mark[]
Bellwethers becomes part of the Polluted Lands following the use of the Wither Mark.[1]
The Grace Is Built[]
The Grace is built on the site of the ruined Bellwethers by the Children of the Woundtree. It is an extremely inhospitable place for them to live and poses many challenges. They are forced to wear gas masks, not consume animal products and face the threat of angels occurring as divine fallout.[2]
Scuffle Between the Parish of Tide and Flesh and the Children of the Woundtree[]
Out in the Polluted Lands, there is a scuffle between the Parish of Tide and Flesh and the Children of the Woundtree, which kills around a dozen people in total.[3]
The Maiden[]
Dan sees a woman out in the Polluted Lands.[3]
Paige ventures out to rescue Moss. As she does so she falls victim to a starving god. She takes refuge with the Maiden, who offers her advice. The Maiden is the woman that Dan saw out in the Polluted Lands.[4]
The Children of the Woundtree Flee[]
Paige, Elgin and Dan lead the Children of the Woundtree out into the heart of the Polluted Lands in search of somewhere free of their gods. They shelter in caves and walk on dressed in radiation suits and gas masks, with Paige at the very back of the group.[5]
Final Partings[]
Carpenter waits for Faulkner out in the Polluted Lands by the White Gull River. She retrieves his body from the water and cares for it before placing it back into the water for the river to carry downstream.[5]
Carpenter finds the final place that the Cairn Maiden promised to her - a willow tree by the White Gull. She waits there a while, but eventually decides to leave. As she walks on, Tainsley shoots at her and she dives into the river to escape. Her fate remains unknown.[5]
